15th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice - Ancillary Meeting

Implementing Restorative Justice to Enhance Access to Justice

Since the adoption of the UN Basic Principles on the Use of Restorative Justice Programmes in Criminal Matters (ECOSOC Resolution 2002/12), restorative justice has expanded significantly around the world and is now recognised as an important component of fair, inclusive and effective justice systems. Yet, despite growing evidence of its benefits, access to restorative justice remains limited and unequal in many countries.

This hybrid ancillary meeting, organised within the framework of the 15th UN Crime Congress, will bring together international experts, policymakers, practitioners and representatives of UN agencies to discuss how restorative justice can better contribute to access to justice, victim support, offender reintegration, and more resilient communities. Participants will explore good practices from different regions of the world, identify key challenges to implementation, and reflect on the future role of restorative justice within the UN agenda.

The ancillary meeting is organized by the European Forum for Restorative Justice together with the Government of Finland, the UNODC and the Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ).

The meeting is open to all and will take place in a hybrid format. Participation is free of charge, but registration is required to receive the link to join the meeting online.
