Training on Restorative Justice and Domestic Violence

Addressing domestic violence through restorative justice requires careful preparation, strong safeguards, and specialised skills. The Swiss RJ Forum, our organisational member, is offering an intensive training designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and tools to work safely and effectively in these complex cases. Led by Annegrete Johanson, EFRJ Board member who has contributed to developing restorative justice responses to domestic violence in Estonia, and Roberta Schaller, the training combines theoretical grounding with practical, case-based learning. Participants will gain a clear framework for restorative justice in the context of domestic violence, concrete methodologies for practice, and a critical understanding of risks, ethics, and safeguards. Moment of Inspiration

On Saturday 31st of January, 2026, Democratic Mayor Zohran Mamdani named Stanley Richards to lead the Department of Correction, marking the first time a formerly incarcerated person would oversee the city’s prison system as commissioner. The move puts Richards in charge of the same Rikers Island prison where he once served 2 1/2 years on robbery charges in the 1980s. Following an additional 4 1/2 years in state prison before his release in 1991, Richards joined the Fortune Society as a reentry counsellor, before eventually becoming the organisation’s president. Council member Selvena Brooks-Powers, a Queens Democrat chairing the criminal justice committee, said Richards “brings lived experience, credibility, and moral clarity to a system that demands all three.” The appointment of Stanley Richards marks a shift in policy-level decision-making that spotlights the value and perspective those with lived experience can bring to reform initiatives, when trust is placed in them.
