The Buenos Aires Declaration: The human right to restore and to be restored

The Declaración de Buenos Aires: El derecho humano a restaurar y ser restaurado (Buenos Aires Declaration: The human right to restore and to be restored) affirms that restorative justice should be recognised as a human right, centred on human dignity, participation, and peace. It calls for public policies that guarantee access to restorative justice and enable victims, people who caused harm, and communities to actively participate in processes of repair and dialogue. The document was created as the closing statement of the II Argentine Congress on Restorative Justice and Practices and the I Ibero-American Forum on Restorative Juvenile Justice, held in Buenos Aires on 16th - 18th March 2026. The new document links to the campaign launched during the 2025 Restorative Justice Week calling for  the recognition of access to restorative justice within the existing human rights framework, the Manifesto on Restorative Justice and Human Rights.

Launch webinar: Practice Guide on Restorative Justice Approaches for Environmental Harm

Environmental harm is increasingly affecting communities and ecosystems, with consequences that extend into future generations. In light of this, there is a pressing need for responses that go beyond addressing the damage itself and also consider accountability, dialogue, and possibilities for repair. To contribute to this discussion, the EFRJ Working Group on Environmental Restorative Justice has developed the Practice Guide on Restorative Justice Approaches for Environmental Harm. The publication addresses a broad spectrum of environmental harms, and examines how restorative justice can offer meaningful ways of responding. The launch webinar will be an opportunity to hear directly from the authors, who will present the guide’s aims, development process, and main chapters, followed by a discussion and Q&A.

Upcoming webinar of the Relational & Restorative Practices in Schools series: Understanding and Responding to Behaviour

Our webinar series on Relational & Restorative Practices in Schools continues with a new session focused on Understanding and Responding to Behaviour. As schools navigate increasingly complex realities, there is a growing need for approaches that help adults respond to behaviour with greater awareness, consistency, and care. This upcoming webinar, organised by the EFRJ Restorative Schools Working Group, will explore how adults can learn to regulate their own nervous system state and respond more constructively when others appear overwhelmed, distressed, or out of control. Especially relevant for school leaders, managers, teachers, and educational or residential social workers, participants will also have the opportunity to reflect together in breakout rooms and join a final Q&A. The plenary session will be held in English, with breakout discussions offered in multiple languages wherever possible.

Last chance for early bird registration: CJPE Summer Course 2026

Criminal justice systems are increasingly being challenged to better recognise the distinct realities of women and girls. In this context, the Summer Course She Matters: Gender-specific Approaches to Women and Girls in Criminal Justice Settings, organised by the Criminal Justice Platform Europe (CJPE) - a partnership between EuroPris, CEP, and the European Forum for Restorative Justice - will explore these issues through a cross-sector and practice-oriented programme. Bringing together professionals from across Europe, the course will create space to reflect on how criminal justice systems can respond more thoughtfully and effectively to the specific situations of women and girls. Through plenary sessions, interactive workshops, and study visits to criminal justice institutions in Catalonia, participants will engage in dialogue and exchange practices aimed at supporting accountability, safety, and meaningful reintegration. Early bird registration is available until 15th April 2026.

Register for the 13th EFRJ International Conference

The 13th International Conference of the European Forum for Restorative Justice, “Echoes of Restorative Encounters: Voices, Evidence, and the Ripple Effects of Restorative Justice in Action”, will invite participants to reflect on how restorative justice is experienced, understood, and made visible across different contexts. The programme brings together lived experience, research, and practice, while also opening space for critical reflection on what counts as evidence, whose perspectives are heard, and how the effects of restorative justice can be understood beyond individual cases. The conference is organised in collaboration with SWPS University and the European Mediation Institute, whose local teams are helping shape this edition in Poznań. Alongside plenaries and workshops, the programme also includes poster presentations, networking moments, field visits, and a pre-conference Practice Day, creating multiple opportunities for exchange and learning throughout the week.

Moment of Inspiration

Ideas to Postpone the End of the World, by Brazilian Indigenous thinker and activist Ailton Krenak, is a short but powerful invitation to rethink what it means to be human and to imagine other ways of relating to the Earth - not through extraction, destruction, and domination, but through connection and care. Krenak writes from the Brazilian context, where Indigenous peoples have long resisted environmental devastation and defended other ways of living with the land, challenging the idea that human beings stand above the rest of Nature. His reflections resonate with current conversations on environmental justice, especially in reminding us that responding to environmental harm also requires listening to voices and knowledge systems that have too often been marginalised.

To learn more about his work and trajectory, you can watch this short video (in English).
