Lessons from and for Colombia and Beyond

The Leuven Institute of Criminology organises, in collaboration with the EFRJ, the 9th Expert seminar on transitional justice on “The Use of Restorative Justice in Transitional Settings: Lessons from and for Colombia and Beyond”.
The Final Peace Agreement of 2016 put an end to many decades of armed conflict between the Colombian government and the most important rebel group of the FARC. The peace accord comprises an elaborate system of transitional justice measures to address the horrendous crimes of the past. This Comprehensive System of Transitional Justice provides a major space for the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (SJP - Jurisdicción Especial para la Paz - JEP), which combines retributive and restorative components to address the many serious human rights violations committed during the armed conflict. Edit Törzs and Laura Hein from the EFRJ will contribute to this very interesting event. The Expert seminar is preceded by the Distinguished Lecture on Transitional Justice, in which the English translation of the Manual on Restorative Transitional Justice of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace in Colombia will be presented and discussed. Thursday 24 October between 2-6 pm (CEST), Online & in person at the Faculty of Law and Criminology. please send a confirmation of attendance - in person or online - to sonja.wellens@kuleuven.be.

These programmes aim to serve as an alternative to the adult criminal legal system, helping to protect young people from harsh punishments while addressing the root causes of their actions.

CEO Jamila Hodge emphasises that restorative justice is vital for community-led public safety solutions, stating, “We will never punish our way to safety, but the healing that restorative justice offers does chart the path to safety and well-being.” Over the next ten months, the organisation will provide training and technical support to ensure these programmes are rooted in community needs and committed to healing and accountability.
