Vacancy

The European Forum for Restorative Justice (EFRJ) is seeking a half-time Communications Officer to join its team in Leuven. This role will lead the organisation’s communication efforts, translating its mission and activities into clear, engaging messages, and strengthening public understanding of restorative justice across Europe. The EFRJ is an international network organisation connecting more than 450 members active in the field of restorative justice as practitioners, academics and policy makers throughout Europe and beyond. We promote research, policy and practice development so that every person may have access to high quality restorative justice services, at any time and in any case. To achieve our aims, raising awareness on restorative justice among professionals and the general public is key. The Secretariat of the EFRJ is composed by a small international team and is based in Leuven.

This is what you will be doing

  • Develop and implement a communication plan aligned with EFRJ’s strategic goals.
  • Create engaging, accessible, and authentic content for digital platforms (website, newsletters, blog, social media) fundraising and campaigns.
  • Lead communication campaigns and coordinate the International Restorative Justice Week activities.
  • Support members’ advocacy with communication tools, guidance, and resources.
  • Manage the organisation’s visual identity, documentation of events (photos, videos, archives), and media outreach.
  • Monitor, analyse and report on the impact of communication activities and adjust strategies accordingly.
  • Collaborate with the Communication Committee and external partners to strengthen EFRJ’s visibility and reach.
  • Liaise with and support team members to fulfil their projects and roles.

This is what we ask from you

  • Fluency in English; additional languages are a plus.
  • Experience in communications, digital media, or content creation.
  • Ability to produce visually appealing and engaging written and multimedia content.
  • Interest in social justice and restorative justice.
  • Flexibility to work in Leuven with a combination of office and remote work (minimum 1.5 days/week on-site).
  • Purpose-driven, ethical, collaborative, and reflective, with a constructive mindset.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion values and action
  • Willingness to travel or work on pre-arranged weekends and evenings when necessary.

Assets (not mandatory, but a plus)

  • Experience in creative campaigns, video production, photography, or graphic design.
  • Familiarity with communication tools (CMS, CRM, Adobe Suite, Canva, AI tools, social media management).
  • Knowledge of European institutions and networks.
  • Knowledge of media and networks.
  • Public communication experience (blogging, social media presence).

Location: Leuven, Belgium
Contract: Fixed term half-time (50%) contract for 1 year that is renewable.
Salary: based on official salary scale for the Flemish social-cultural sector (PC329.01)

At the EFRJ, we value authentic human connection. While we appreciate the ethical use of AI as a tool for efficiency, we are hiring a Communication Officer for their unique human voice and strategic intuition.

If your application sounds like an AI, we cannot assess you. We would rather see an "imperfect" idea that is original and brave than a "perfect" idea that is generic. Applications that appear to be significantly AI-generated without original human insight will be disqualified. If you are shortlisted, we may ask you to discuss how you developed your ideas for these tasks during the interview.

1) Create a social media post that celebrates a significant pioneer or proponent of restorative justice and their achievements. Create the visual content and write the text of the post as well. Showcase your post in a way that communicates clearly how it would appear on the chosen social media. Explain on which platform would you launch it and why.

2) Create a social media post on behalf of the EFRJ reflecting on a specific real event or issue that pertains to one of the following (pick one area):

  • an ongoing large scale violent conflict between countries/communities
  • a structural social injustice
  • an environmental harm

3) Create a poster for a workshop on restorative justice responses to institutional abuse.

4) Have you produced any communication materials in your previous work that you would like to share? Feel free to add 1-3 materials (maximum 3) to this document. Please merge them in the pdf as well - if these are online videos, you can add the link, if it is printed document, use a photo of it, if it is more than page long, please select a sample page for preview). This task is optional.

5) Add your maximum one page CV to the end of the document.

III) VIDEO

Explain what restorative justice is to one of the following persons in a maximum ’60 seconds video:

Address one of these people. Think of their situation, what can be their needs and interests, and why restorative justice can matter to them. Think of a language and style that speaks to them.

  • 11 years old child
  • MEP of any national or European Parliament in Europe (specify which one)
  • For a woman whose car was stolen. The police has caught the person who stole the car, and he admitted it.

Please upload your video on a platform of your choice (e.g. YouTube, Vimeo), set it as “unlisted” or password protected and send us the link (with eventual password) via the application questionnaire.

A committee of four persons composed by current EFRJ staff and board members will review applications and shortlist candidates for an interview. We appreciate the effort that you put in the application and you will definitely hear back from us, even if not selected. STEP 2

Interviews with selected candidates will be held in person or online around mid of March.

Provisional starting date is 1st of April 2026 (negotiable).
