- As explained by Belinda, while plane travel may be cheaper for you, it actually has a huge cost for the planet
- In the case of shorter trips, it may take less time than the journey to the airport and the waiting time there
- Scenic routes and less baggage restrictions
- “It’s a great adventure”
Eco-friendly Travel Tips for Tallinn
As part of our ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility, the EFRJ is delighted to announce a special info session on lower-carbon transportation tips for our upcoming conference in Tallinn. In recent years, we've been exploring ways to make our events more eco-friendly, acknowledging the challenge of international gatherings. This year marks a step forward with the creation of a platform to exchange ideas on environmentally conscious travel.
Join us on Wednesday, 31 January, at 2pm for a one-hour exchange with Belinda Hopkins, an experienced restorative environmental activist within our membership. Known for her transformative work in restorative practices in educational settings, Belinda also brings a wealth of knowledge on sustainable travel. Having traversed Europe by land for EFRJ events, she'll share invaluable tips on organising sustainable trips by train, bus, boat, bike, and more. As we know that the part of train travel that proves to be one of the most complicated is organising the trip, we want to provide our support with all your questions. Don't miss this opportunity to learn how to plan a mindful journey to Tallinn!

Why should you pick land travel?
Organising your journey
- Check route options using different websites (more on the next slide)
- Consider sleeper trains to save time
- Make sure to check if you have enough time between two connecting trains to allow for delays
- Compare individual ticket costs with Interrail prices
- If you have the time and chance to break up your journey between different destinations, use the opportunity for a quick city break
- Get travel insurance in case of missed trains, lost items, or illness
Useful websites
seat61.com - the first website Belinda checks for the best route options, explaining how to travel comfortably by train or ferry
raileurope.com - online booking sight with a list of different possible connections from city to city
interrail.eu - a system that allows travelers to explore Europe by train with a single rail pass, cost-effective and flexible for multi-day journeys
Recognising limitations
As train travel can often be the more expensive and the less time-sensitive choice, we recognise that not everyone can afford to go for this option. We are also aware that in the case of the conference in Tallinn, these tips are tailored more for people travelling from within Europe. Still, we hope you have been inspired to consider alternative forms of transport for your next journey and now have more resources on where to start the planning!
