Restorative justice and systemic violence

Webinar with the members of the EFRJ Working Group on Hape, Polarisation and Violent Extremism
on the Relevance and Application of Restorative Justice in Tackling Systemic Violence
offering a restorative framework and approach to addressing hate, polarisation, and violent extremism

Monday 13 January 2025 at 16:00-17:30 (CET)

This webinar is organised by the EFRJ Working Group on Hate, Polarisation and Violent Extremism, which has spent the past two years exploring the use of restorative justice in addressing systemic violence. The group includes members from Finland, Brazil, Belgium, France, Colombia, and the UK.

Its work is grounded in diverse perspectives, drawing on frontline experience in violent extremist cases and their aftermath, community-level polarisation, personal experiences of racism, and academic research on hate crime and polarisation.

The session will deepen attendees' understanding of the systemic violence that underlies specific violent acts and polarised contexts, and how this informs restorative practices. We will also share insights from the newly re-issued Violent Extremism and Hate Crime Practice Paper, alongside results from the global survey conducted by the group in late 2024. Attendees will also hear from a restorative practitioner actively working in polarised environments.
