Time to Talk

Inclusivity, Accessibility, Power and Privilege
Online, 23rd of September 2024 (4-5:30 pm CEST)

***Closed event for EFRJ members and conference participants: registration is mandatory***

“Time to Talk” is a moment of reflection, among EFRJ members and/or invited guests, dedicated to starting a conversation about specific challenges that the organisation is facing.

The 1st gathering was held online (28 November 2023) and the 2nd one as one of the parallel workshop sessions of the EFRJ conference in Tallinn (31 May 2024). Both hold space to reflect on how to be coherent with restorative justice values and principles in times of hate, polarisation and acts of extreme violence.

This 3rd “Time to Talk” is an invitation for EFRJ members as well as for participants of the EFRJ conference in Tallinn to further zoom-in on issues of inclusivity, accessibility, power and privilege. These themes came up as part of the feedback of the conference: we will probably not have “good” responses for all, but we want to make sure that these concerns remain on top of our agenda and we search for possible solutions as part of our joint work.

This online meeting (this time open for members and also those who participated in the Tallinn conference) is scheduled on Monday 23 September at 16:00-17:30 CET (Brussels time).

Background information

On 28-31 May 2024, the European Forum for Restorative Justice (EFRJ) organised its 12th international conference in Tallinn, Estonia, entitled “Just Times: Restorative Justice Responses in Dark Times”. In line with the different global challenges that today’s societies face, the programme committee chose to focus on the potential of restorative justice in times when conflict, war and violence are either present or threaten most nations, regions and communities.

The event brought together 368 participants from 43 countries across the globe. They were professionals, academics, policymakers, practitioners, artists, students and activists dedicated to further developing restorative justice in their countries and internationally.

After the event, we received positive feedback from participants, and also great ideas for improvement. While some ideas are more easy to think about with our local organisers and programme committee, others need some more brainstorming together with our members and followers, because they tackle key themes for our organisation and for our movement in general (e.g. inclusivity, privilege, accessibility, language barriers).

For this reason, we would like to invite you for an online “time to talk” session, an initiative normally organised for members only, to share concerns and to join forces in searching for innovative solutions and ideas to move forward, and also to explain the “backstage” of our reflections when we put together our yearly activities.
