The State Probation Service is an institution under the supervision of the Minister of Justice, acting on the basis of the Law on the State Probation Service, adopted by the Saeima on 18 December 2003, which entered into force on 1 January 2004 and Cabinet of Ministers 1010 «Bylaws of the State Probation Service».
The probation system is organized differently in each country, but its objectives and means of achieving them are similar. The Latvian probation system is based on the practice of other countries and the recommendations of experts: it is flexible and envisages extensive use in the future.
