Lecco Restorative City is situated in Lombardy, the Italian region that has been affected the most since the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak. In the past year, the usual restorative initiatives in the community of Lecco were suspended or could not be carried out as originally planned. Still, professionals, volunteers and citizens embarked on a new journey, which is definitely inspiring for other cities in Europe.

Starting from June 2020, they organised a series of restorative circles (the so called RestoCovid Circles) bringing together doctors and nurses, survivors of Covid-19, family members who lost someone because of the pandemic, and other citizens affected by this situation. The voice spread around the city and by now this group has hosted 5 circles (9 meetings between June and September 2020) bringing together 70 citizens.

More about the RestoCovid Circles

The RestoCovid Circles were designed to give voice to what had happened during the first lockdown through a timely initiative meant to serve as an opportunity for the whole community, which got scared, distanced and hurt. After the fear, the pain, the loneliness, the many gestures defined as "heroic" and generous, the solidarity and the rediscovered community spirit, a feeling of anger, a search for reckoning and blames and a dribbling of responsibilities began to spread.

In those few months, those who joined the initiative were the people who had been sick, hospitalised, who had lost their family members or had experienced radical separation; the people who had witnessed an increase in the demand of care and kept working in high risk emergency conditions, at first  unprotected, disoriented, scared and even subject to defections; the  people who had remained locked in their homes and isolated from their beloved ones.

The RestoCovid Circles have tried to encourage a respectful listening and a dialogue of truths among participants by turning subjective gazes into welcoming gazes, capable of cherishing the others’ experience and making it possible for them to  come out of it at least a little transformed as for their emotions and reflections on what had happened.
